Ukrainian riot grrrls Death Pill just dropped a new single ‘Phone Call’ , off their upcoming album SOLOGAMY, out 20 June via New Heavy Sounds. As heard yesterday on the LOUD WOMEN radio show!
‘Phone Call’ is a shift from their previous fast-paced and biting riffs in ‘Craterface‘ . With a more classic, surfer, doo-wop feel, ‘Phone Call’ is taking things a little slower. This yearning romantic punk song has sweet riding riffs, some chorus-y hooks, and a much more upbeat tone.
Flashing back to movies like Grease, ‘Phone Call’ encapsulates the feeling of lying in bed waiting for a crush to call. The way romance fully takes over your mind. The truth is this is far from a love song, it’s a song of love being met with a dial-tone . The obsession is there, but there is no connection. Calls are being missed and nights are being spent waiting without a single ring. ‘Phone Call’ is sweetness with a sour kick and a perfect skate around town tune.
“Every time the phone vibrates or the screen lights up, you hope to see his name, but disappointment comes again and again. Waiting for a phone call is a fragile emotional state that touches the deepest corners of the soul. It requires patience and humility, but it can also teach us to appreciate the moments when the connection does happen. When the long-awaited call finally rings, all the suffering seems worth it – if only for a moment. That moment can be so sweet that all previous agony is forgotten. Waiting for a call is not just an emotional roller coaster; it is a reflection of our vulnerability and desire to be understood. The desire to be needed by someone.

We are opening our hearts, hoping that someone else is also willing to share the journey with us.”
I’m willing to pick up. The song is vulnerable without sounding mournful. It’s wistful without being a downer. There’s openness and hope and a willingness to try.
