Chicago-based industrial rock trio, burndy, have smashed onto the scene with their gritty self-titled debut album, that released earlier this month on 2 May.

Album opener ‘AGCAT’ is perfectly crafted for a grainy, found footage horror film. As a sombre and inquisitive instrumental hums behind the crackling and slashing overlay, the goosebumps soon follow. While most of the songs on this album could be on a horror soundtrack, ‘AGCAT’ particularly stands to cement the signature foreboding tone burndy has brilliantly cultivated throughout the rest of the album.

‘BURN’ burrows further into this tone as it serves as a pulsing, malevolent promise of getting even and rising to new heights in our own darkness. Squalls of guitar scream a sense of finality over the eager flicks of lighters that seal the fate of the track. Baneful and packed with plentiful industrial sound motifs, ‘BURN’ will torment you in the best way.

‘BREATHE’ exhales an angry reclamation over a prickly noise-rock fuzz. A formidable track committed to being made whole by those who burgled them, burndy empowers and stupefies once again.

‘MASK’ follows even deeper into the psyche by diving into the careful image we curate of ourselves, what’s simmering beneath it, and the ultimate snap. For those forced to endure systematic mistreatment, this track will hit hard. Static-slams and scream-like effects lace ‘MASK’ with an atmosphere of dread and tension culminating in a delightfully ominous song.

‘REFUSE’ ends the album with a biting rage. Ploughing whole-heartedly into a political fuck you, burndy holds no punches. Leaning into defiance and empowerment, ‘REFUSE’ is a track to embolden you as you wade through this political climate.

With the ideal blend of experimentation and industrial essence, burndy delivered a dark and reviving album. Tugging at all the complicated threads that make us human, they leave no stone unturned here.
