Brighton’s favourite queer alt-pop duo are back – and they’ve dropped an absolute banger. COWZ (Tasha and Saga) return with ‘ELEPHANT’, and we’re calling it: this one’s our Single of the Week.
If you’ve caught COWZ live – at LOUD WOMEN Fest 2023, say – you’ll know exactly the kind of chaotic brilliance they bring to a stage. But on record, they’re just as punchy, political and precise.
‘ELEPHANT’ starts soft – hushed, conspiratorial vocals drawing you into the whisper network – before it explodes into a warped hyperpop chant-fest of cheerleader venom and electronic snarl. Saga’s production is razor sharp, and Tasha’s delivery is all knowing smirk and righteous rage. It’s giving: the gossip is the gospel. As Tasha explains:
“ELEPHANT is quite literally about the elephant in the room. It’s a fun take on advocating for gossiping, especially amongst women, and usually about grotesque actions taken by men. As previously stated at our shows, ‘gossiping makes the world go round’. There’s a line that says – ‘I’m a gossip, not a liar’ – gossiping gets a bad reputation, but how else would we know that John from the local parish is cheating on his wife? That the guitarist from your favourite band has allegations? Gossiping keeps women and LGBTQ+ people safe.”
And in Saga’s words:
“If Regina George’s inner monologue was an instrumental, it would sound like this.”
We can’t argue with that. It’s all glitch-pop attitude with a bite that sinks in deep. It’s thrilling to hear a band lean into the power of pop as protest – and do it with this much swagger.
Fresh off winning John Kennedy’s Band App 2025 competition and snagging mainstage slots at Truck, Y Not, Victorious and Tramlines – not to mention the LOUD WOMEN stage at Rebellion Festival – COWZ are absolutely flying. With a new EP in the works, more singles to come, 2025 is already theirs for the taking.
