¡Ay Carmela!, the indie-rock duo consisting of singer and songwriter Carmela Pietrangelo and percussionist Aimee Smith, just released their latest EP, Standing Where You Stood.
With a sound inspired by PJ Harvey and grounded in alternative 90s rock, this album offers a follow-up to their second album, released in 2023, Tokens. This album was recorded in August 2024 in the band’s native Bristol, with contemplative tracks reminiscing on past experiences.
The heartfelt track ‘Trying It On For Size’ reflects on previous relationships that haven’t ended as the narrator hoped, whereas the more optimistic ‘In a Nutshell’ focuses on looking back at parent-child relationships with a new level of empathy.
This project comes as a farewell to the group’s bassist, Bruno Chavez, who left the band after recording to focus on his own music and studies. The two-track release features a unique, live recording sound.
“We wanted to capture our live sound as a trio before Bruno moved on, and it felt right to take a more live approach for these songs as they feel quite direct”, explains Carmela.
