London’s Velvetine have just released their new single ‘Miss Together’, exploring themes of isolation and desiring freedom.
The track is about a woman who seems to have her life together, but in reality she is alone and doesn’t have control over her life. The track is sung by Mia Scarlet who really brings these lyrics to life through her powerful, angelic vocals.
Velvetine are an alternative rock band with inspirations from slowdive, Siouxsie and the Banshees and Sonic Youth. They incorporate genres such as goth-art rock and post-punk into their music.
The single comes ahead of their debut EP, coming out later this year. They also have announced headline gigs in Paris (Supersonic 14 March), Brighton (Green Door Store 25 March) and London (Hackney, for Venue Grrrls 24 April).
“Miss Together
She felt so alone and unheard”
Later in the song, the lyrics change to:
“Miss Together
She went after control
She had to pick what they see what they know and what they don’t
Ticking like a bomb in her family home
She got angry all the time”
The themes portrayed in the lyrics of this song suit the music extremely well as the song starts off much quieter in dynamics and is more calm. In the line “Miss Together”, in every section of the song, the dynamics are lower because of the instruments dropping out. This is very effective as it makes the louder, more chaotic parts of the song more effective because of the range in dynamics throughout the song.
Another creative feature of this track is the storytelling alongside the instrumental. As the story gets more chaotic and real, the music gets more chaotic with everything becoming louder and more instrumental parts being added.
This is a must listen to track and wouldn’t feel out of place on the epic soundtrack of the tv show ‘Yellowjackets’.
