Laura Cahen’s second date of her UK tour was truly enchanting. The French singer-songwriter was joined by album collaborator and multi-instrumentalist Josephine Stephenson who seems completely in sync with Laura’s vision.

As Cahen and Stephenson played the entirety of Cahen’s latest album, De l’autre côté, their incredible vocals cast a glow over the room.

With Cahen’s guitars, and Josephine’s exceptional use of keys and a drum machine, the two musicians could have filled a room three times the size. Indeed, I doubt you’ll be able to see Laura Cahen smaller venues for very long. However, the moon-painted backdrop, fairy lights, orbs, ferns, and close proximity of the stage at The Folklore Rooms enhanced the intimacy of the songs; a true gift to anyone lucky enough to be in the audience.

Between songs, Cahen told the narrative that underpins De l’autre côté, weaving a queer love story and post-apocalyptic kind of magic through the gig. I was already a huge fan of the album but hearing it live in its entirety really emphasises how beautifully it’s constructed and what a huge talent Cahen is. If you have the opportunity to see Laura Cahen, take it.
