Hot off their recent successes, HANABIE continues to push the boundaries of metalcore with new EP Bucchingiri Tokyo, out now on Sony Music. Absolutely killing it at making a name for themselves on an international scale, HANABIE drops 6 brand new songs right before they begin yet another world tour.
A Japanese quartet made up of Yukina (vocals), Matsuri (guitars/backing vocals), Hettsu (bass/backing vocals), and new addition Chika (drums/backing vocals), HANABIE seamlessly combines Japanese and English lyrics with playful rhythm and pitch changes. Their newest EP Bucchigiri Tokyo may be their most guttural release yet!
Their most popular song off the album right now is ‘OTAKU Lovely Densetsu,’ which dives into the global obsession with the digital world. It is a great intro to the sound and the style of HANABIE, with helpful English subtitles!
Lyrics from ‘OTAKU Lovely Densetsu’“Whatever you want, as much as you want
Let the sympathetic nerve flow
Fandom unite and enjoy the scene; IRL – Adiós
Messed-up judgment; Mom goes mad? IDK – Can’t care less!”
HANABIE identifies as Harajuku-core which includes a playful combination of genres like metalcore and hyperpop. Their combination of guttural growls and bubbly sopranos keep you on your toes and ready to rock out. Fans of HANABIE are often dubbed HANAbees who have joined the HANABIE mania.
‘GAMBLER,’ which in my opinion is the heaviest on the album, is heavy enough that I had to double-take to make sure this wasn’t classified as death metal. ‘GAMBLER’s’ breakdown tried to blow my socks off and definitely made a HANAbee out of me!
