You never really forget your first summer romance. It always starts off so beautifully – just caught up in the heat, full of blithe remarks and sweet nothings – before coming to a colder somber end. Up-and-coming artist Suki Summer captures that bittersweet end in her new single, ‘Marianne’.
Recorded at the Premises Studio London, ‘Marianne’ showcases Suki Summer’s ability to delve deep into the pool of her own vulnerability and share a cupful with others. Her melancholic voice and 80s synth notes will strike a chord with fans of Billie Eilish’s ‘What Was I Made For’.
When asked where her inspiration for writing ‘Marianne,’ came from Suki Summer replied,
“This song explores my relationship with intimacy and vulnerability, I wanted this song to encapsulate the time we spent together which was beautiful and fun but also tainted with a sadness of knowing that when the summer ended so would our time together. The name of the song and subsequently the hook of the chorus ‘Marianne’ I credit to him. He noted my likeness to Marianne from one of his favourite books ‘Normal People’ by Sally Rooney and also pointed out my resemblance to the actress Daisy Edgar Jones who plays Marianne in the tv adaptation. I think it felt so perfect and so sad that our shared love of this book and story, in many ways, also mirrored our reality.”
As we soon sink into 2025 I’ll be eagerly awaiting whether or not Suki Summer releases a full raw album that is just ready to bloom.
