West Yorkshire-bred alt-rock band goo has released Tiny Dinosaur That Only I Can See, a three-track single that shows they possess as much stylistic range as they do charm and wit.

The title track has an upbeat surf-rock flow and features impressive vocal arrangements à la the Beths and REVO, which build to a particularly striking climax during the song’s triumphant outro. Lead vocalist Tanisha Badman wrote the song to honour a childhood friend who died by suicide. Through the song’s hopeful message and the childlike imagery in the title, Badman draws upon the joy of their shared youth.

“I reminisced about the innocent and carefree things we did together as children, which are in stark contrast to the seriousness and tragic reality of her passing. I wanted to write a song to both immortalize her memory and our friendship.”

The second track, ‘Miso’, is gloomier than its companions. Relatively mellow verses give way to a roaring, Nirvana-esque chorus, all while maintaining the polished production and pitch-perfect harmonies that are typical of goo’s music.

The single ends with ‘Underground or Overseas’, an updated version of the band’s debut single. The track finds a satisfying middle ground between the light in ‘Tiny Dinosaur That Only I Can See’ and the darkness in ‘Miso’; thanks to generous amounts of fuzz and reverb, the song manages to balance the lush and melodic elements with the guitar-driven and gritty ones.

goo are about to embark on their “Tiny Dinotour”, which will kick off with a gig in Leeds on 8 October.
