Ruti‘s dazzling new single, ‘Break My Own Heart’, is a perfect anthem for the end-of-summer blues.

Ruti is a British-Nigerian singer-songwriter who makes “soul-stirring” indie-pop with an alternative edge. Still fresh off the release of their EP, Lungs, in May, they have returned with a single that continues to build the sonic world they’ve created thus far.

In ‘Break My Own Heart’, soaring vocals and atmospheric production take the fore, with distorted guitars rumbling beneath the surface. It’s a listening experience fit for a drive with the windows down on a warm evening – the perfect distraction from underlying discontent, or from the knowledge that all beautiful things must come to an end. In Ruti’s own words:

“It’s a conversation with myself. Giving myself grace but also confronting myself about my tendencies to think too far in the future and not live in the present. I’m the kind of person that just gets either too excited or too anxious about things that haven’t even happened and it leads to me spiraling. It can lead to disappointment but most importantly it takes me out of the moment.”

Ruti combines raw, angsty songwriting with understated, hypnotic beats and dynamic instrumental elements – something that fans of early Maggie Rogers will undoubtedly fall in love with. It’s clear that Ruti, like many of us at LOUD WOMEN, use music as a force for healing during the hard times. We look forward to hearing what the rest of the year has in store for Ruti, and to having every last one of our heartstrings pulled by the hypnotic lull of their voice.
