Macclesfield alt-rock trio Queen Cult recently released their latest EP Be Better. Queen Cult’s lead singer and founder Maisie Johnson answered a few questions with LOUD WOMEN’s Reva May. Check out the interview and exclusive photos by Amy Lauffer Neff below!
Share the inspiration behind Be Better:
Boundariesssss, with myself and the people around me. Experiences that have unfolded and I’ve learnt something in the process. I’ve covered my experiences with gender, sexuality, toxicity, friendship with myself and others. I’d say it’s a roundup of the last 12 months! I had a very healing year, so it’s like I’ve just called you up, my best mate and filled you in on the year I’ve had. My internal journal.
Describe your writing process:
Like what was said earlier to be honest, a lot of my inspiration and process narrative comes around my own experiences or things i’ve witnessed, but sonically the band will tell you right now, I will go into a little writing den for three days (give or take). A hole of obsession if you will, where I just demo all the parts before we take it into rehearsal, humanise it and go record it.
What’s your favourite track on Be Better and why?
How dare you make me decide such a thing! I think over the years this EP feels the most like a body of work. It has a theme running throughout, which was not on purpose. And as a writer, each song offered something back to me, so it’s hard to have a favourite when they all feel part of something <3 What’s your favourite?
What advice would you give your younger self?
Stop giving a sh*t – no one is actually looking at you, they’ve all got their own sh*t. We’re all just trying to crack on. If you don’t react they have nothing to go off.
What’s next for Queen Cult?
More more moreeeeeee. We just wanna keep building on our foundations, create energetic tunes, dive a little deeper sonically and open it up. See where we can take it. And we wanna get you lot jumping. Come to a show 🙂 lets hang xo.
