Rosie Tee intrigues with new avant-pop album ‘Night Creature’

Birmingham avant-garde composer and performer Rosie Tee released today her electrifying album, Night Creature, via her very own record label Kikomora Records.

‘Lectern’, opening at track one, begins with a deep space wave groove and angelic chanting whose echoes evoke multitudes. Evolving into a vibe of holy or sacred electronica, ‘Lectern’ dives into the layers and complexities of speech. Grave and musically provocative, this track is as enticing as it is profound.

Written as a spectral ode, ‘Wishbone’ reflects a portion of Tee’s exploration into her Polish and Eastern European roots. Draping her poetic folktale over twinkling, percussion-sprinkled instrumentals, track three has an overwhelmingly magical sound. Further paired with Tee’s commanding vocals, ‘Wishbone’ feels like being told a story by the crackling fireside. It’s beautiful and it sticks with you.

At number four lies my favourite song of the album, ‘Where We Go’. To me, this track is the perfect example of peak water-level video game music design. Dramatic synth echoes and light percussion makes the track drift through a comforting and nostalgic sea and absolutely nail the ‘it’ factor of water-based soundscapes. On top of the fluid-like atmosphere of ‘Where We Go’, the chorus darkly speaks of a sanctuary barely still within reach, and how we take care of it. Begging the question of how we can honour and nurture our earthly sanctuary, our collective comfort, our home. If you too are obsessed with aqua audios and ecological responsibility, this track is a must-listen.

Night Creature is a thrilling album that absorbed me in music and themes alike. If you want music to guide you through sonic journeys into shifting psychic landscapes, this is an album you don’t want to miss.
