Last month Merryn Jeann debuted her first full length album, DOG BEACH, out on co-founded label Rescue + Return Records.
Merryn Jeann is a talented Byron Bay Shire, Arakwal Country based singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. DOG BEACH is a genre-bending work of art that feels new with each listen.
Recently Merryn Jeann shared more about DOG BEACH with LOUD WOMEN. Check out the interview below!
What was the inspiration behind DOG BEACH?
An accumulation of life memories, people and reflections tied together and articulated via time spent at a beach full of dogs.
What’s your writing process/routine like?
I’ve always found routine difficult and recently I got an ADHD diagnosis so now I understand why.
My songwriting process has always been quite random due to this lack of structure. Often a song comes all in one sitting after months of nothing and sometimes I chip away over years at one idea.
What’s your favourite track on DOG BEACH?
‘TALKING TO ANGELS’. It’s the most intimate both musically and personally. I feel this is the sound I will somehow keep coming back to.
There’s a warped cassette tape recording I made from an old piano recording which are the chords used in ‘PIGEONS ARE DOVES’. This is the body of the outro in ‘TALKING TO ANGELS’ which accompanies a poem spoken by my nana. This section of the song is my most treasured on the album.
What artist inspires you?
Arthur Russell
