Hello, it’s Mishkin here. Sorry for my radio silence, I’ve been very busy listening to (and making) metal music. Got another one for you here…
Today I want to highlight a band who have been under the radar for a long while, and are now breaking through. ANKOR hail from Catalonia (Spain) and have been together since they were teenage friends in 2003. Nearly 20 years later they are still going strong and now making huge waves in the metal scene.
Drummer Eleni Nota is an absolute powerhouse, playing complex and delicate arrangements, swinging between heavy driving rhythms and tasteful, syncopations during the softer sections. Add a bed of thick guitars (David Romeu/Fito Martinez), solid bass (Julio Lopez), and the sound is completed by Jessie Williams incredible vocals which range from deep, earthly death growls right up to high and pretty, floating melodies. The band seamlessly travel between these sections, giving ANKOR a formidable and energetic sound. I would love to see this live.
The band now embark on their next album, which is due for release in 2023. You can watch the two singles so far “Prisoner” and “Darkbeat” on Youtube now.
