We are products of our environment. When moving across town or state lines, people tend to change a bit as we assimilate. Sometimes we ourselves don’t realize we’ve changed until we run into an old friend who notices the difference. America Jayne grew up in a small town in Connecticut. She relocated to Brooklyn, NY and an intensity in her music began to build. Today, LOUD WOMEN feature’s AJ’s heaviest single to date ‘Eat You Up’.
A bit of a Jekyll and Hyde element graces the track. The verses are soft and touching, akin to a “Dear John” letter. The choruses are the exact opposite, performed with a “snap out of it” manner, complete with hardcore style vocals laid over a buzzsaw of distortion.
Admitting you’re wrong in a relationship is something some of us struggle with but that’s the topic AJ covers. I’m not sure she’s sad about it though. The lyrics sound more like she’s confessing to a mistake or misdeed to a partner who’s blindly in love. Lyrical lines “why can’t you see what I’ve done” or “you’re in denial”, might mean she may feel more guilty than sad.
Of the new single, America Jayne wrote:
“The song views a relationship from the viewpoint of an emotionally distant partner, ‘maybe it’s avoidant attachment style,’ and how their actions have harmed another person. The song is about taking responsibility for your own actions, while still selfishly wishing you won’t come out as the ‘bad guy.'”
