Montréal collective La Sécurité released ‘Serpent’, the latest cut from their upcoming debut album Stay Safe! It’s fuelled by groove-led beats and a punky DIY rawness while the lyrics burst with self-assured attitude.
‘Si tu veux la vérité/ T’as juste à ouvrir tes oreilles/ Attends ton tour avant de parler/ Je crie pas plus fort que les corneilles’
asserts singer Éliane Viens-Synnott, the words (translating as ‘If you want the truth/ You just have to open your ears/ Wait your turn to speak/ I scream no louder than the crows’) bouncing along.
As the song progresses, the chorus turns into a chant – the words
‘Pense-tu vraiment que j’suis pas au courant?/ Voyons, c’est évident, tu me connais pourtant’
reminiscent of schoolyard mockery.
La Sécurité is a five-piece made up of Éliane Viens-Synnott, Félix Bélisle, Melissa Di Menna, Kenneth David Smith, and Laurence Anne Charest-Gagné, musicians known for being part of other projects such as Choses Savages, Laurence-Anne, and Silver Dapple. With songs in English and French, Stay Safe! (to be released 16 June) is a collage of identity and inspirations. New wave tendencies are mixed with a Riot Grrrl style energy while the accompanying music videos, as demonstrated with ‘Serpent,’ ‘Anyway,’ and ‘Try Again,’ function like personal zines with self-filmed footage inviting us into their gang.
‘Serpent’ introduces the more disco side to La Sécurité’s sound and highlights the sentiment of playfulness that’s at the core of the group.
