Canadian grunge duo Softcult released their latest EP, See You In The Dark.
Twins Mercedes and Phoenix Arn-Horn guide us through the dark with their best work to date. Softcult blends shoegaze, dream-pop, and punk, paired with powerful songwriting that comes alive on See You In The Dark.
This DIY duo is an unstoppable force leading the digital era of the Riot Grrrl movement. Softcult is in control of their vision and narrative: They both write all of their lyrics and Phoenix works on production, engineering, and artwork and Mercedes directs and edits their videos. They also produce their own zine called SCripture.
The EP title was inspired by a quote from Friedrich Nietzsche: “Battle not with monsters, lest ye become a monster, and if you gaze into the abyss, the abyss gazes also into you.”
“It is an analogy for the things we’re afraid to face. It represents confronting our innermost fears, usually in those vulnerable moments lying awake at night when our minds are racing. It’s sort of an acknowledgement of our darkness, and the darkness of others, like “hey, I see you”.

On See You In The Dark, Softcult boldly address heavy topics ranging from sexual assault to climate change. Softcult never turns away from darkness but races towards it.
“While it’s important to acknowledge our darkness, we also can’t submit to it. We have to strive to be better people, and leave behind a legacy of positive change. I think it’s important to do everything we can to try and make a positive impact on the world, even when that feels impossible. Because if we don’t at least try, who will?”

2023 is the year of Softcult. See them live on their UK + EU headline tour.
