Bellatrix: I Was An Aphid – EP

London-based Alt-Pop artist Bellatrix released an electrifying reflective EP, I Was An Aphid.  The EP is named after American feminist and civil rights activist Audre Lorde’s observation:

“So women are maintained at a distant/inferior position to be psychically milked, much the same way ants maintain colonies of aphids to provide a life-giving substance to their masters”.

Audre Lorde (1978)

On I Was An Aphid, Bellatrix shares their experience of being in an abusive relationship and the path of overcoming the trauma. Bellatrix finds strength and emerges on the other side of the toxic undertow of the abuse. While the topic is heavy, each track is vibrant and innovative.

‘Thrive’ is the album closer and the perfect ending as Bellatrix finds clarity as they look ahead to the future.

“In 2019 I broke up from an abusive relationship that I’d been in for three years. When I look back I think ‘fucking hell, how did that happen?’ because I never expected it to happen to me. This EP is a journey through all that: the relationship, the end of it, and what happened afterwards.”
