Quim Smashers are coming to play our next gig on 21 April at DIY Space for London! The London trio describe themselves as "punk meets burlesque and angry women in a grotty broken down warehouse that is still somehow nicely upholstered". Frontwoman Hannah Kessler is celebrating her 21st birthday at the gig, and it's going to be a massive party – we cannot wait! Here's their 10 questions ...
Alison Mosshart
2. If you could add one member to your band – any person, living or dead, musical or otherwise – who would it be, and what would they play?
Nico. Or Lou Reed, and they could play whatever they like
3. What was the last song you wrote, where were you when you came up with the idea, what inspired it, and how did it turn out?
It’s a song called ‘Extra Lubrication’, about period sex. We are very pleased with it, cos it has a very funky riff.
When we supported Pussyliquor at the Old Blue Last – that was quite a buzz. Also when we played at the anarchist feminist party was totally inspiring and exciting.
5. Recommend a book that you think our readers might not have heard of .
Death and the Penguin. It’s a really well written book about a writer who has a pet penguin and is trying to survive a situation where he finds himself writing obituaries for people who are not dead.
6. What’s your best piece of advice for young musicians?
Do it for yourself, for love and the joy of creating.
7. Your top 3 most beloved albums ever – go.
Sister – Sonic Youth
The Downward Spiral – Nine Inch Nails
10. Give your top 5 contemporary bands/musicians
St Vincent – cos her melodies and lyrics are amazing
[That's 4 but who's counting.]
