Can you imagine Debbie Harry singing “Dancing with Myself”? Well, Time & Time Again, the new single from Montreal band Debbie Christ, makes that idea feel almost real from its very first chords. The opening has the same danceable energy, but replaces Billy Idol’s punk swagger with a more seductive and slightly dramatic vocal performance. At first, everything points to a bright, danceable new wave song, but it soon becomes clear that heartbreak hangs over the track.
One of its main strengths lies in the contrast between its luminous sound and pain-filled lyrics. The synthesiser takes centre stage, shaping much of the song’s tone and melody, while a prominent bass line adds a post-punk edge and blends naturally with the pop-rock guitars. The energy continues to build towards the ending, where the tempo picks up slightly and the repeated line “We will meet again” brings the song to a kind of catharsis.
“Time & Time Again” moves between new wave, post-punk and pop-rock, combining different styles without settling fully into any one of them. Debbie Christ do not bring the song to a definitive close, but they leave their identity in no doubt: a blend of rock urgency and pop sensitivity that gives them a distinctive personality and sets them apart from other bands that are just as difficult to categorise.
