Brighton and Hove shoegaze/jangle-pop quintet Goodbye release their tender, exploratory debut EP, These Things Take Time.
After getting the chance to review their single, ‘13a’, earlier this year, Goodbye’s poetry captivated me, and I had to see what their EP had in store. While ‘Meat’ is vague enough to linger into varied interpretations of being viewed as an object, and ‘13a’ intoxicates as it overtakes, every track covers another section of dream-pop expertise.
‘Take Time’, echoing the EP’s namesake, is a nostalgic ache stewing in slamming instrumentals that ask you to observe the life around you before it’s too late.
‘These things’ are a scrapbook of fleeting moments and emotions, amalgamating into one huge looming feeling. Life trickles away so quickly, and sometimes you can look up and realise everything that once surrounded you has completely fallen away. Skeptical that time really does heal all wounds – this track is about patience, forgiving, growing and trusting during hazy times that the dust will settle and skies will clear again.”

‘Origami’ has an artfully organic balance of delicate vocals that mature into aggressive instrumentation by tracks end. Whilst ‘Benji’s Collar’ is a pointed discussion on truly understanding someone and the pain that replaces the unmet wanting as the music swells into breathy chants and cries.
Goodbye covers vast emotional ground on These Things Take Time. Mulling over complex strata from track to track, this EP unites masterfully into a glorious dream-pop delivery. Elegantly eerie and intuitively melodic, Goodbye holds their ground and fully sheds their newcomer status with this resplendent debut.
