19 September is apparently one of those days when London gets one last burst of summer sunshine before the autumn colours take over – and I was furiously changing into a t-shirt before leaving the house for the early doors at London’s iconic Electric Ballroom to catch those fleeting sun-kisses.
You might be thinking ‘catching sunshine in a dark venue? what is she on about?’ – but as soon as Taylor Acorn erupted onto the Camden stage, she lit it up like a firework. Opening with a clearly foreshadowing ‘Hell Of A Show’, Taylor had the audience in the palm of her hand from the get go. With a magnetic stage presence and unrivalled energy, she delivered an electric show to a 1500-strong adoring audience.
“Seeing how many of you are out there took my breath away,” she confessed, visibly moved, “I am so thankful to be able to do this and to come across the world to see you”.
After nearly a decade as an independent artist, she recently signed to Fearless Records, and her upcoming album Poster Child coming out on 24 October marks a new era for Acorn, one filled with confidence and empowerment. She later mentioned in between songs that she nearly quit making music, and was often overwhelmed by the warmth emanating from the crowd. And it was certainly a mutual connection, because among the high octane performance full of hair flicks, high kicks and many twirls, the rapport she had with the audience was faultless. She often turned the microphone over to allow the full house to sing the lines back to her and took pauses to take it all in. Her fanbase has been fiercely loyal and this biggest London headline show was not only a full circle moment, but it also created ‘‘a safe space, no matter what’s going on in the world’’.
Her set was filled with crowd pleasers – from the early favourites like ‘I think I’m In Love’ and ‘Coma’ to ‘Goodbye, Good Riddance’ and ‘Hangman’, the first lead singles from the upcoming album. After ‘Birds Still Sing’ we had the pleasure of witnessing an intimate moment as Acorn’s bass player brought out a cake for her upcoming birthday next weekend, resulting in a full venue ‘Happy Birthday’ sing-a-long. Straight after Acorn launched into her brand new single ‘Crashing Out’, which came out that same day, and was greeted with an amazing reception as the audience already sang it back to her.
‘Burning House’ was the perfect showcase of Taylor Acorn’s impressive vocal range, while 2022’s anthem ‘Shapeshifting’ and 2023’s ‘Psycho’ were the perfect two songs to provide a grand finale to a spectacular show. After a solid few ‘one more song!’ chants, Taylor Acorn came back out to deliver ‘Survival In Motion’, a perfect energetic close to send everyone home on a blissful sonic high.
Looking around me I noticed the genre cross over among the audience, with fans wearing Ozzy Osbourne and Limp Bizkit t-shirts as well as the die hard emo and punk crowd who grew up on Avril Lavigne and Paramore. Taylor Acorn is proudly carrying that torch and providing the new generation with a contemporary emotionally charged, high-energy punk-pop.
