With a suitably gothic blend of post-punk, doom and krautrock, East London’s Cold In Berlin are back to soundtrack the transition towards darker nights. A taster from their forthcoming album Wounds, a pulsing synth and plaintive guitar heralds the eerie tale of the ‘Hangman’s Daughter’.
Recorded in a deep misty valley in the Welsh countryside, ‘Hangman’s Daughter’ opens with a techno bassline and develops with post-punk guitars and a fierce vocal performance from Maya Berlin. It’s a haunting song with an icy rage contained within. Maya explains:
“Hangman’s Daughter is an unrequited love song. A woman was loved but could not love in return so she is drowned by the man who loves her. She is not lost though – she haunts the killer and he can’t escape her. The title hints at the past, but actually this is a very current issue for women today – how to literally survive when they can’t love a man who has decided he only wants her.”
