London-based indie punk icons cheerbleederz are back with a serious bang – new EP prove me wrong packs punch, power and poignancy into four tight tracks. The impressive songwriting is a considered balance of wit, charm and raw emotion. My personal favourite, ‘passenger princess’, explores overcoming co-dependency using the metaphor of learning (or not learning) how to drive. Meanwhile, lead single ‘i deserved better’ is a rallying anthem for anyone struggling with self-esteem, particularly in the context of relationships:
“’i deserved better’ is about knowing your self worth, and recognising when you’re in a rut. The chorus doesn’t even have any real words, but sometimes you don’t need em!” – Kathryn Woods, guitarist
The care cheerbleederz have poured into crafting both music and lyrics for this EP is clear from even a cursory listen – although you should definitely do more than that! One of my favourite aspects of prove me wrong is that friendship experiences are explored, rather than romantic relationships (a rare find for an asexual music fan like myself!). On the trials and tribulations of adult friendship, drummer Phoebe Cross has this to say:
“If your friendships don’t serve you anymore, or they feel more like a competition, it’s time to let go! Feeling a bit defeated after a hang with a friend is not how you should feel.”
