London-based composer and sound designer Jo Quail has released a fierce, atmospheric journey on her latest single ‘Rex’, out now via Adderstone Records.

Accompanied by artwork and a visualiser crafted by Costin Chioreanu, ‘Rex’ draws us into an ashen-fogged landscape of rubble, ruin, and war-torn statues as the melody palpably cries out for gentleness. Utilizing acoustic and electric cello and a compass of polarity, this track steers listeners towards a crisp, enigmatic urgency.  The severity of the notes, weighted pauses, and bombarding percussion are the dedicated symphonic shepherds of this abstract soundscape. Recorded as a live session rather than a post-production track, ‘Rex’ emerges fresh from Quail’s constant musical evolution and represents her creations as living arts in progress.

The first single from Notan is Rex, some of you who’ve been with me since the early days might remember it first appearing back in 2010. It’s a piece I’ve returned to in live performance, and over time it’s evolved and reshaped itself. This version is something quite different: a reimagining that feels both familiar and entirely new. I’m really proud to be releasing it now — and yes, it’s over 9 minutes long (a bold choice for a single, I know!).”

Delicate yet harsh, Jo Quail layers ‘Rex’ with a signature sonic sensitivity that is rich and fearless. A bold entry for contemporary classical artists, Quail is still reaching for new heights with her next album, Notan, due for release 12 September.
