As heard on this week’s LOUD WOMEN show on Resonance FM, Northern Ireland’s Gender Chores new single ‘Roy’ is an angry anthem, aimed at those who punch down instead of looking up to see who’s pulling the strings. It highlights that no one’s immune. You are never too far away from being the punched. There’s always going to be someone who thinks they are above you. Growing up, the word ‘scum’ was thrown at lead singer Sam McCann and her friends for being the poor kids running around their estate, just like it’s thrown at all minoritised groups. It’s used to great effect in the chorus

‘S – C – U – M’
I see the way you look at me
I see the way you look at them

Sam tells us:

Right now the world feels like it’s going backwards in so many ways, with bigots and fascists being platformed and marginalised voices silenced. We want to fight back against that however we can, and combat the narrative of hate and fear that got us into this place.
With every release from this EP, we want to contribute in some way to the issues that have influenced our songs. That’s why 50% of this track’s Bandcamp profits will go to NICRAS, a Belfast based refugee led organisation supporting refugees and asylum seekers.

Download the track from their bandcamp to help raise money for NICRAS.
