South Arcade, an alt rock 4 piece from Oxford that have established themselves as a band to watch thanks to their big social media presence, have released their new single ‘2005’ – the titular track for the bands newly released EP.
The single has music video that draws from the y2k revival trend on TikTok, and the song accompanies this, with a heavy guitar intro and fast paced drum beat straight out of the nu metal recipe book.
Vocals from frontwoman Harmony Cavelle give the song an upbeat, poppier energy, bringing it back into 2025 and giving the band a unique element to their sound.
Nu metal was always something very exclusionary in it’s first wave in the late 90s and early 2000s, known for its infamous misogyny and homophobia from fans and musicians alike. However, due to the cyclical nature of how genres gain and lose popularity, nu metal and it’s image has been revived as a nostalgia-based trend with far better inclusivity and diversity, and South Arcade are a wonderful example of that, celebrating nu metal as a genre, but redefining elements of the subculture that should be left in the past.
