Lucy & La Mer‘s ‘Palm Springs’ is the sonic equivalent of a rom-com. Aptly released on Bi Visibility Day (23 September), the uplifting lyrics tell a story of falling freely in love with a woman.
Hailing from LA, Lucy’s musical career spans over a decade of world tours, LGBTQ+ activism, collaborations with Jessie Paege, and even a TEDx Talk. Her latest sugary single follows in the footsteps of queer power pop anthem ‘Not a Phase’, as well as brooding, easy-listening covers of ‘Watermelon Sugar’ and ‘Tainted Love’, to name just a few.
In ‘Palm Springs’, Lucy pleasingly blends catchy bubblegum pop à la early Taylor Swift with the whimsical ukulele-backed romance of dodie and Clairo. The harmonious backing vocals are dreamy and light, while the lyrics cover queer clichés in the most relatable way, notably:
“Pink hair, nose ring, kind of girl who cuffs her jeans!”
Palm Springs is out on streaming platforms now. See Lucy & La Mer live in (fittingly) Palm Springs, CA on 29 September 2024 – get tickets here.
