With a killer intro and savagely wailed lyrics, Boy Jr‘s ‘I’m Breaking Up With You’ is the ‘I Will Survive’ of the social media age.

“Lead everything-ist” Ariel Allen-Lubman – better known by the name of their DIY songwriting project Boy Jr – is a modern pop sensation. Boasting 14.2 million likes on TikTok, their online personality is as bubbly and infectious as their music. Their short bursts of song, often queer-coded and always tongue-in-cheek (see: ‘TikTok Killed The Bridge In Pop Songs‘), are to thank for Boy Jr’s seemingly constant viral presence.

Now, they are treating us to their second full-length DIY album, with lead single ‘I’m Breaking Up With You’ released on September 18th. It’s the ultimate break-up banger; in Allen-Lubman’s own words:

“You know how people will tell you to write a letter you’ll never send when you’re upset with someone? “I Hope You Feel Terrible” is like the letter I wasn’t supposed to send.”

To get a taste of Boy Jr’s comedic charm, look no further than their Spotify bio, where self-describing phrases range from “10 bands in a trench coat” and “electro magnetic anti troll” to “music for people who regularly have to deal with fuckboys.” ‘I’m Breaking Up With You’ certainly fits the criteria.

The full album I Love Getting Dumped will drop this October. Boy Jr’s US tour opening for Jhariah is in full swing – get tickets here.
