Hong Kong raised, LA-based alt-r&b artist/producer Deb Fan releases her sophomore EP Kowloon Demos. Fan is known for merging 90s R&B with modern electronic sparks, creating an effortlessly cool and unique sound.

On Kowloon Demos, Fan explores themes of female empowerment, identity, and finding one’s place in the world. This new wave of music was inspired by Fan’s trip back to her roots in Hong Kong. By going back to her past, Fan unveiled the next chapter of her music and personal life.

“Hong Kong is very fast-paced, constantly in flux; the unaccustomed would likely find themselves violently thrown into a state of vertigo. Unfortunately, though I’ve lived here for the better part of my years, I found myself in this very position: an alien to these familiar-but not-so-familiar sights. Everything felt foreign. My initial discomfort eventually gave way to clarity. I was ultimately left with the foundation of Kowloon Demos.”

Kowloon Demos comes to life with collaborations with Max He, Leo Varella, Mimi Li, Aphi Tenza, and Sol ChYld. Each artist brings their own style and culture within their features, making Kowloon Demos a global experience.

The EP title was inspired by the now demolished Kowloon Walled City, that was known as a lawless enclave. There’s a freeness within Kowloon Demos that mirrors this lost city.

“‘Kowloon Demos translates the phenomenon of the Kowloon Walled City into my idea of self. I’ve come to recognize myself as a fluid, amorphous identity, rejecting predefined identities in favor of a multifaceted persona. Such a defiance is euphoric, even liberating: a sound detachment from the prison of false dichotomies.”
