Our video of the day comes from Cy, aka the DIY solo projectof Stockholm-based songwriter Amanda Cygnaeus: ‘My Name Next to Yours’ is out today.
Cy has been writing songs for other artists for several years – credits including LÉON, Iggy Azalea, Paloma Faith and Soleima. In 2018, she was nominated for ‘Songwriter Of The Year’ by Swedish Music Publishers Association. This gorgeous indiepop shimmy is her first time releasing her own music, and we hope it’s the first of many.
“I wrote it after my first real heartbreak, back when me and my ex-girlfriend broke up. I have a tendency to either romanticize the past or worry about the future, so this was a way of reminding myself of what the relationship was really like and the fact that she ditched me. Kind of “how dare you?” but at the same time feeling okay cause you know that you just weren’t right for each other. I had built up those emotions for a while, so the song literally flew out of me.”
“Music has always been my way of empowering myself. I’ve kept a diary everyday since I was a kid and have about 2000 notes in my iPhone. This is where I constantly go back to understand myself, and this mess tends to end up in my songs.”
The video was recorded at an old-school boxing center in Stockholm, directed and produced by Cy together with Gustav Öhman Spjuth and Cy’s sister Fanny Cygnaeus, from Fanny & Alexander Productions.
“I wanted the video to symbolize this pull between looking back at your relationship with loving eyes and simultaneously feeling like shit about it. The struggle between beauty and pain and that whole cluster of ambivalent feelings when you’re trying to control your mind, which literally feels like being knocked straight in the face.”
