Jemma Freeman: Pre-LOUD WOMEN Fest 5 Question Interview

Making a return visit to LOUD WOMEN Fest on 14 Sept – this year on the Dome stage (at 4.30pm – don’t miss!), Jemma Freeman and the Cosmic Something have had an action-packed year – gigging constantly on the DIY and queer punk circuit, and gearing up for an album release in October with Trapped Animal Records (same indie label as The Baby Seals). Here’s their pre-Fest 5 question interview …

1. For people who’ve not seen you play live before, what can we expect from you at LOUD WOMEN Fest?

High energy glam psych rock, fronted by a non binary drag king lothario beamed straight from outer space.

2. Fill in the blanks …

“Our sound is like the lovechild of Siouxxie and the Banshees and Anna Calvi with a bit on the side from Marc Bolan

3. Give us your band manifesto in no more than 20 words.

All the guitar pedals all the time.

4. Who are you most looking forward to seeing play at LOUD WOMEN Fest?

Hurtling – I had the absolute pleasure of watching Jenn play acoustic versions of their songs as part of a live radio session and I was blown away by their voice and guitar playing.

5. What made you want to play at LOUD WOMEN Fest?

Gender equality for line ups at most festivals is still abismal. It’s festivals like LOUD WOMEN fest, Crocroland and the Bechdel Sound Test that disprove the idea that there aren’t enough female acts to have play. There is still huge gender bias in music and I want to be part of a movement that paves the way for the next generation to feel not only that they are welcome but that they can thrive. You can’t be what you can’t see, so I think as a non-binary person it’s essential to take up space and be seen. LOUD WOMEN fest exposes not only the flaws in the status quo but also the enormous variety of talent and creativity in the DIY scene; it provides a platform where there wasn’t one before. We’re absolutely delighted to have been asked back to what looks to be one of the most varied and powerful lineups yet!
